Healthy Snacking While Stuck At Home

Be honest… have you already devoured all those quarantine snacks you stocked up on?

You’re not alone!

So many clients have share with me that they turn to food for comfort in times like this.

Plus, we’re all stuck at home now. It was a lot easier to avoid the pantry when you were miles away from it at your job!

Now it’s right across the house and I bet you keep finding yourself staring at the snacks, trying to talk yourself out of those chips and cookies.

You don’t have to sabotage all your hard work just because you’re home all day now!

I want to help you maintain those healthy snacking habits while you’re stuck in your house, so I’m giving you 4 secrets to snack smarter during the quarantine.

Have a Snack Plan!

If you plan ahead, you’re less likely to give in to mindless snacking. Choose your yummy snacks/desserts for the week. For instance if you LOVE ice cream, then work it into the plan. Have a portion of ice cream for dessert Monday, Wednesday and Friday! Put other healthy options, like RX bars, protein packed yogurt, Lundberg rice cakes, fresh fruit, and protein balls at eye level on your pantry and fridge shelves and try to make your snacks a little more unique. Take advantage of this time to get creative with the snacks! Also, take a look at the snacks you have in your house! If you are downing a bag of chips per day and feeling sluggish and not so hot afterwards...stop buying those things! Even if you have kids...they will survive without it!

Change Your Location When Stressed

If you’re more likely to eat when you get stressed out, take a break when you notice it happening. Walk away from your computer. Move to a new workspace. Step outside and get from fresh air. Allow yourself 10 minutes on your phone. A quick distraction can squash that stress and need for snacking.

Identify the Craving

Are you hungry or just bored? Are you finding yourself at the pantry door...again for the 8th time today? Take a deep breath and assess what's going on in that moment. Are you overly tired. Kids triggering stress? Is something in your routine causing you to eat more? Becoming aware of the situation makes us more likely to be able to change a habit. Assess what’s going on and make changes as needed. For example, if you’re not getting enough sleep, your stress level could go up, leading to more mindless eating. If you notice that issue, try going to bed a little earlier and it may solve your snacking struggle!

Give Yourself Grace

No one is perfect and a few days of going overboard with the snacks does not make you a failure. Be kind to yourself. Plus, I never want you to deprive yourself! Food should not leave you feeling guilty or bad. The most success I see is in clients who learn how to eat everything in moderation...no restricting...no binging.
